Legal Paperwork
You will soon realise when you come to Tenerife that there islots of paperwork you and your family may need to have in order before you can work, rent an apartment, buy a car, open a bank account, take driving lessons, etc.
The main documents are:
NIE Number
Similar
to the National Insurance number in the UK, and a vital form of identification.
Social Security Number
Same as
in the UK.
Residencia
Document
to say that you are a legal resident in Tenerife.
Empadronamiento
Document
from your local town hall to confirm where you live.
Some of these documents are now just a sheet of paper with a blue stamp
and can be easy to lose so make sure you keep the originals safe and take
photocopies, getting replacements is always a chore!
If you don’t speak Spanish it can be difficult to organise these
documents yourself so most people pay someone who knows the system to apply
for them on their behalf. Most Estate
Agents will do it for a small fee, or if you have a friend who is Canarian they
may be able to help.
